How to update your username, email, or password in WordPress
You can update your account details in WordPress at any time. This article shows you how to change your username, email, or password from your WordPress dashboard.
Prerequisites
- You must be logged in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Only Administrators can change other users’ details. Regular users can only update their own profile information.
Update your username
⚠️ Caution: WordPress does not allow changing your username directly from the dashboard.
To update your username:
- Go to Users > Add New.
- Create a new user account with the username you want to use. Assign the Administrator role
- Log out and sign in with the new username.
- (Optional) Delete the old user account. When prompted, attribute content to your new account so you don’t lose any posts or pages.
Update your email address
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Users > Profile (or Users > All Users to update someone else).
- Under Contact Info, update your Email field.
- Scroll down and click Update Profile.
- Check your inbox and confirm the change via the verification link.
Update your password
- Go to Users > Profile.
- Scroll to the Account Management section.
- Click Generate Password.
- Enter your new password (or use the generated one).
- Scroll down and click Update Profile to save.
Troubleshooting
Q: I don’t see the option to change my username.
A: WordPress doesn’t allow direct username changes. Use the “Add New User” method above.
Q: I didn’t get the confirmation email after changing my email address.
A: Check your spam folder. If you still don’t see it, your site may not be sending emails—contact your hosting provider.
Q: I lost access to my email and can’t reset my password.
A: You may need to reset your password directly in your hosting control panel or WordPress database please contact our support team for this.
